Artisan – Shuji Nakagawa
Born in Kyoto in 1968, Shuji Nakagawa studied sculpture at Kyoto Seika University before continuing his training at the historic family workshop, Nakagawa Mokkougei, under the guidance of his father Seiji, a recognized Master of Traditional Craft (Important Intangible Cultural Property).
His work brings together traditional Japanese techniques and a contemporary sensibility, and has been presented internationally. Among his most notable recognitions:
– Excellence Award and Grand Prize at the Kyoto Arts and Crafts Exhibition
– Commissioned to create the official champagne cooler for Dom Pérignon (2010)
– KI-OKE stool included in the permanent collection of the V&A Museum, London (2015)
– Finalist at the LOEWE Craft Prize (2017)
His works have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Japan and abroad.
